This is a great activity for those children who struggle with comprehensions. In this activity, they must looked carefully at the pages in the book to answer the questions.

Narrative Pack

This resource introduces your class to the characters and settings to help them create their own narrative.

The children are then encouraged to consider different things in the three sections of their story…

Beginning of a story – Introduce and describe the characters and setting.

Middle – What is the main character’s goal? Describe the journey. Introduce the problem.

Ending – How was the problem solved? What did the main character learn?

Through the story the children must tick the teaching points to self assess their work.

Commas for Lists

In this resource, you children will be encouraged to reflect on the adjectives used in the story of The Snail and the Whale.

Non-Fiction - Comprehension

This resources is aimed at year 2 and 3, although could be used for some year 4s.

There are different levels to this comprehension which challenges the children to find out more about whales and more specifically orcas. Ironically, orcas aren’t even whales.

Newspaper Report

This is a newspaper report about a sighting of two orcas off the coast of Ireland.

The children can read the report and discuss the features. They can then create their own using the blank template.
