Barnaby Visits Edinburgh Castle
Edinburgh is the capital of Scotland and is located on the east coast. It has some important and beautiful buildings, lots of shops and many museums and galleries. Barnaby Bear visits Edinburgh Castle, built on a big rock. A foot soldier from the time of Robert the Bruce helps to show Barnaby around. Barnaby learns about the different levels or wards of the castle and their defences. These include the portcullis, turns in the staircases and the cannons. Following tradition, the cannons are fired each day at one o’clock.
Travel back in Time
Barnaby and Becky are transported via their imagination to medieval times. They dress up and take on the role of king and queen of a castle.
Label the Knight
When learning about castles this term, your KS1 children will be eager to learn more about knights.

The Normans - Bayeux Tapestry
The Bayeux Tapestry is an embroidered cloth nearly 70 metres (230 ft) long and 50 centimetres (20 in) tall, which shows the events leading up to the Norman conquest of England concerning William, Duke of Normandy, and Harold, Earl of Wessex, later King of England, and culminating in the Battle of Hastings.

Shield, Sword and Helmet
These are different art ideas when exploring castles and knights that can be completed with your children.
The shield is the easiest to create. Type in ‘Blank shield template’ to Google and choose your favourite shield. Allow your children to design the shield based on themselves and what is important to them.
