Royal Roy - 'oy' and 'oi' Phonics Story
Royal Roy is a young prince who is forever annoying the staff in the castle by singing loudly and destroying things. One day, little Roy received a gift and a note from his dad. Will the note change the type of king Roy will be?
This is a fantastic resource that introduces your class to a range of ‘oy’ and ‘oi’ words. The children will read through the short story and underline all of the ‘oy’ and ‘oi’ words.
On the activity card, the children are challenged to answer the questions by remembering the events in the story.
Word Wheels
Allow your children to create different words using the word wheels.
You children will write a letter/s in each section of the two wheels and write the ‘oy’ or ‘oi’ sound in the middle of the rectangular box. Using split pins, you must then connect the wheels to the rectangular frame. Your children can now create ‘oy’ or ‘oi’ words.

'oi' Anagrams
In this game the children must spell the words by selecting the bouncing letters in order they appear in each word in the word bank to the left.
Spelling In Context
This is a super learning game when looking at the ‘oi’ sound.
This activity challenges the children to work on the spelling of the ‘oi’ words and also to read for meaning. The children must place the correct word into sentence given after reading and understanding.
You can give your less able children a word list to help them with the sentences.
The 'oi/oy' Song
This catchy song explores the ‘oi’ and ‘oy’ spelling within a variety of words. You can ask the children to think up of their own ‘oi/oy’ words in a class chant.
First organise the children into a circle. Each child will then think of a word and will tell the other children that sound followed by the word.
For example, “O – Y says… BOY, BOY, BOY.” The children will then take turns trying to remember which oy/oi sound is used in the word.
This is a great way for children to think of the ‘oi/oy’ words in a fun and meaningful way.
Choosing the Spelling
A great game in which the children will choose the correct sound for the word.
The word is accompanied by a picture to give clues. This game enables the children to explore new vocabulary whilst developing their sound and spelling knowledge.

You can differentiate the word search by selecting the more difficult option.

This is a great worksheets that allows the children to work on their word recognition.
To extend this worksheet, remove the word bank. By doing this, they must also show a clear understanding of both the ‘0i’ and ‘oy’ spellings.
